Health Care

Update:

As many of you have heard, the Health Care for Michigan campaign has officially announced that they will not be able to collect enough signatures to get on the ballot for this year. While the volunteer effort went well, they fell short on the fundraising to get enough paid signature to supplement the volunteer effort.

The fight for health care in Michigan continues, and the coalition will continue to work on legislative strategies to improve health care access.

Thank you for all the hard work you put into this campaign. The commitment of our volunteers and broad support we received when collecting signatures were truly inspiring. The enthusaism behind this initiative reminds us that there is hope for real reform in health care.

Here at the Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice, we will continue to work on this issue. We know how important it is. Our next step is to screen “Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making us Sick?” next Thursday, July 10. We also plan to organize a debrief meeting to go over what lessons we’ve learned in this campaign. Stay tuned for that.

Finally, IF YOU STILL HAVE PETITIONS, PLEASE TURN THEM IN TO THE OFFICE. Though they won’t help us put this imitative on the ballot, they can help mobilize voters to demand a fair health care system. Please turn them in by July 7.

Thank you again for your great work.

Health Care for MI Ballot Initiative

Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice is proud to endorse Health Care for Michigan to put health care reform on the ballot in 2008.

We need reform that controls health care costs and provides health care coverage to every Michigan citizen. Our solution is this proposed constitutional amendment for the November 2008 ballot:

“The State Legislature shall pass laws to make sure that every Michigan resident has affordable and comprehensive health care coverage through a fair and cost effective financing system. The legislature is required to pass a plan that, through public or private measures, controls health care costs and provides for medically necessary preventive, primary, acute and chronic health care needs.”

ICPJ will be working with other local and statewide organizations to educate Michigan voters about this ballot proposal and to advocate for its support. We need your help! Please consider the following options for getting involved:

  • Volunteer to collect signatures * – (Email gracek@icpj.net) Only voters registered in Michigan may be involved in petition circulation. Find more information at http://healthcareformichigan.org/Pages/Petition_Instructions.pdf
  • Join us for our monthly Michigan Health Care Security Campaign volunteer meeting – Thursday, April 24th, at 7pm at Memorial Christian Church (730 Tappan, Ann Arbor, MI 48104).
