CROP Hunger Walk 2009 REPORT:

This year’s walk was a great success! Thanks to all the walkers, donors, and volunteers who made it possible to raise so much for local and global hunger relief and prevention.

Highlights:

Over 500 community members from all faiths, backgrounds, and ages walked either a 3k or 10k through Ann Arbor, raising awareness and funds to fight hunger.
You raised over $56,000 to help end hunger! (Recently updated – final total)
Over 500 community members took a “Stand against poverty and hunger” on International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (standagainstpoverty.org)
You donated ~400 lbs of food to serve your neighbors in need at Avalon Housing
You raised over $10,000 to help local food banks and meal programs

Update: Ten Thousand Villages is supporting CROP in two exciting ways this year!

Gift Certificates: TTV is offering a $5 gift certificate to every walker who completes the Walk (to be handed out at the post-Walk meal).
Community Shopping Event: A percentage of all proceeds from a week of shopping at TTV (dates TBD) will be donated to the CROP Hunger Walk. Print out the community shopping event flier to bring with you to TTV during the week of 10/11-10/17 to benefit CROP!

Ten Thousand Villages mission statement – to promote dignity, hope and a living wage for artisans around the world by selling their handicrafts, by telling their stories, and by educating locally about Fair Trade.

Local Agencies receive CROP grants!
25% of the funds raised by the CROP Hunger Walk go to local hunger relief and prevention agencies. (The remaining 75% goes to Church World Service’s relief and development work around the world.) The more we raise, the more we support the very important work of these local agencies! This year’s grant recipients include:

The Breakfast Program at St. Andrew’s (4%)
Hope Clinic (4%)
Aid in Milan (4%)
Packard Health (3%)
Interfaith Hospitality Network / Alpha House (3%)
Northfield Human Services Food Pantry (2%)
Avalon Housing (Canned goods and produce)

What is the CROP Hunger Walk?

CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty.
The Walk unites community members in walking together to take a stand against hunger in our world. Together we raise awareness and funds for international relief and development, as well as local hunger-fighting.

Past Success

Since 1975 we have organized the annual Washtenaw County CROP Hunger Walk as an interfaith response to local and world hunger. Over the last 33 years walkers from some 50 area congregations and schools have raised more than one million dollars to assist both local and international agencies in relieving hunger and addressing its root causes
In 2007, we raised a record-setting $70,000+ with over 600 walkers
In 2008, we united community members from over 50 local congregations and organizations to walk together against hunger

How do I get involved?

Register now – Help raise funds for the CROP walk campaign online with “Walk on the Web”
Become a CROP WALK RECRUITER to get your congregation or organization involved. Attend the Recruiters’ Orientation/Open House on Wednesday, September 9th (stop by between 5-7pm Memorial Christian Church, 730 Tappan Ave., Ann Arbor)
