What is the CROP Hunger Walk?
- CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty.
- The Walk unites community members in walking together to take a stand against hunger in our world. Together we raise awareness and funds for international relief and development, as well as local hunger-fighting.
Local Support
- The following local hunger-fighting agencies will receive funds or canned goods collected at this year’s CROP Hunger Walk (the more we raise, the more they receive!):
- Love Thy Neighbor – Has operated for 104 consecutive weeks since its inception in March of 2008 providing thousands of lunches to the homeless and hungry.
- SOS Community Crisis Center – Provides integrated services to homeless individuals, families and youth of Washtenaw County to help move them from homelessness to self-sufficiency and permanent, stable housing.
- Avalon Housing – Develops and manages affordable housing while providing support services for people with very low income and disabilities.
- Interfaith Hospitality Network (Alpha House) – Provides temporary shelter, food, and support services that help families overcome barriers and secure permanent housing.
- Peace Neighborhood Center – Works to meet the challenges of integrating communities, combating drugs and violence, and addressing educational and economic inequalities.
- Aid in Milan – Offers a variety of services that assist the elderly, unemployed, and hungry in the Milan community.
- Catholic Social Services – Offers more than two dozen programs designed to address a variety of issues confronted by families and individuals of Washtenaw County such as adoption, pregnancy, family therapy, domestic abuse, substance abuse, disabilities, homelessness, and hunger.
- Packard Health – More than a primary healthcare provider, Packard Health has established a food pantry and medication and insurance enrollment support programs to ensure all patients are equipped to maintain their individual wellness.
- Community Action Network – Improves the lives of children, youth, and families from under-resourced Washtenaw County through collaborative efforts that ensure food, housing, wellness, and a supportive community are available to those dealing with life challenges.
- St. Andrew’s Breakfast Program – Responds to the needs of the community by offering daily meals every day of the year.
- Hope Clinic – Provides free medical services to low-income children and adults without medical insurance.
- Emmanuel House (to receive canned goods) – Serves the older adult community of Ann Arbor by providing housing and care for those with insufficient income and no longer capable of living alone.
- Northfield Human Services (to receive canned goods) – Maintains a food pantry that distributes over three tons of food to individuals and families every month.
- Growing Hope – Provides hands-on education and youth leadership programs, offers cooking and nutrition programs for low-income families, and expands the capacity of groups to develop school and community gardens.
- Muslim Social Services – Manages the Back Door Pantry food distribution program for area residents in need of assistance.
- Since 1975 we have organized the annual Washtenaw County CROP Hunger Walk as an interfaith response to local and world hunger. Over the last 33 years walkers from some 50 area congregations and schools have raised more than one million dollars to assist both local and international agencies in relieving hunger and addressing its root causes
- In 2007, we raised a record-setting $70,000+ with over 600 walkers
- In 2008, we united community members from over 50 local congregations and organizations to walk together against hunger
- In 2009, we gathered over 400 lbs of food to donate to local families in need
- In 2010, CROP was held on the same day as a 350.org global action day to celebrate climate change solutions. Educational material was provided at each water stop to demonstrate the link between climate change and global hunger.
