Muslim Movie Series: Journey into America
Thurs., February 11th, 7-9pm – In the new year, ICPJ will continue its Muslim Movie Series, showing entertaining and educational films to dispel stereotypes and encourage a better understanding of Islam and Muslims in America. In Feb., Common Ground will show “Journey into America”. How do Muslims fit into contemporary American society? How have the uniquely American ideals of pluralism, openness, and cultural integration held up in post-9/11 American society? In the film, Akbar Ahmed, renowned Islamic scholar and author, and his team of enthusiastic young Americans explore America and American identity in a post-September 11th world in their journey across America. Temple Beth Emeth/St. Clare’s Episcopal Church (2309 Packard St., Ann Arbor) 7-9pm. Join us for dessert and coffee/tea before the film at 7pm. Faith & Civil Rights Vigil in Support of Justice at Andiamo workers
Friday, February 19th from 7-8 pm – Support workers at Andiamo’s of Dearborn as they protest discrimination and wage theft. The event will include civil rights songs as well as Sister Cathey DeSantis, Detroit Catholic Pastoral Alliance & Pastor Bill Wylie-Kellerman, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Detroit. Sponsored by the Restaurant Opportunities Center, Metro Detroit Interfaith Worker Justice, and Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice. The event will take place outside Andiamo Dearborn Restaurant, 21400 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn. There will be carpools leaving at 5:45 from “The Cube” near Maynard and Jefferson in Ann Arbor. Racial Justice Book Group: Uprooting Racism by Paul Kivel
Thursday, February 25, 7:00pm. Celebrate Black History Month by joining ICPJ for the first of our Racial Justice Book Group as we discuss Paul Kivel’s Uprooting Racism: How White People Can Work for Racial Justice. According to the Midwest Book Review, “At once gentle and provocative, Uprooting Racism helps readers strategically intervene against racism in workplaces, institutions, public policy debates and everyday personal interactions. ICPJ Benefit Concert Featuring Charlie King and Karen Brandow
Sunday, April 11, 7:00pm — Charlie King and Karen Brandow will be performing a benefit concert for ICPJ at Temple Beth Emeth/St. Clare’s Episcopal Church on April 11 at 7 pm. Charlie and Karen have a strong local following, and have been loyal supporters of the annual gatherings at Fort Benning. Their concerts are always a wonderful blend of Charlie’s own songs along with covers of both classics and new material from songwriters all around the country. An excellent way to re-energize ourselves for our ongoing work for peace, justice and equality. Regular tickets are $15, benefactor tickets are $50, and we encourage folks to consider taking out ads in our concert program. U.S. Social Forum in Detroit
June 22-June 26 – ICPJ’s organizing individuals, congregations, and organizations to get to the the U.S. Social Forum in Detroit! The USSF will convene social movements from across the United States and globally. Connect with others concerned about peace and justice; learn about improving social conditions from our community to Detroit to New York to California. The USSF will take place June 22-26, 2010 at Cobo Hall and Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit. Read more about this very exciting effort at http://www.ussf2010.org/.
