Faith Leaders Urge Senators to Work for Strong Climate Change Legislation

Published by Chuck under Global Warming

“It’s not someone else’s problem!” It’s not tomorrow’s issue!” is how Rabbi Bob Levy of Temple Beth Emeth, Ann Arbor described the mandate for people of faith, the broader community, and our political leaders to take action to stop climate change.

Rabbi Levy was speaking at a press conference to release a letter from 143 Michigan faith leaders urging our U.S. Senators to work for strong climate change legislation on Thursday, April 15.

Joining him was Áine Pearson, pastor of Crossroads Tabernacle Church, an Earth-based religious group, emphasized, “Climate change affects every one of us. Rising oceans, melting polar ice and El Nino pay no attention to what God or Gods you believe in or how you think the Earth came to be.” Rev. Don Bromley, Executive Pastor of Vineyard Church added, “We have a responsibility to care for God’s Creation, including humanity.”

The signers, who included Imams, Rabbis, clergy from Earth-based religions, nuns, Protestant and Roman Catholic clergy, and others came from across the state, from large and small cities and rural areas.

The letter they signed addresses the moral responsibility felt by people of faith to care about all the world’s people especially the poorest and most vulnerable, who will be the first affected by climate change. It also stresses that “that taking courageous action to address climate change is crucial to increasing our security, creating more jobs, and defending against serious economic problems that will arise if we fail to act.”

ICPJ partnered on this project with four other organizations–Michigan Interfaith Power and Light, Voices for Earth Justice, 1Sky and Environment Michigan–which helped gather signatures and set up the press conferences.

Climate Change Press Conference

Published by Chuck under Global Warming

We’re having a press conference this THURSDAY to share the word about faith leaders speaking out against climate change.

Can you attend? We want a good turnout to show the press that there is a lot of support for this issue. Here are the details:

WHEN: Thursday, April 15th, 10am

WHERE: First United Methodist Church on 120 S. State St., Ann Arbor

WHAT: Ann Arbor-based faith leaders will discuss why the passage of the climate and energy bill is a moral issue that over 140 Michigan faith leaders have signed on in support. Demonstrating that the climate issue is one that concerns more than just environmental groups, these leaders will talk about the justice and stewardship implications of climate change. After the press conference, which is also occurring simultaneously in Detroit, a contingent of leaders will drop the letter off at the offices of Senators Stabenow and Levin.

WHO: Rabbi Bob Levy, Temple Beth Emeth; Rev. Aine Pearson, Crossroads Tabernacle Church; Rev. Don Bromley, Executive Pastor, Vineyard Church of Ann Arbor.

The event, which is organized by the Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice, Voices for Earth Justice, Michigan Interfaith Power and Light, Clean Water Action, and Environment Michigan, comes just as expectations are elevated that the Senate will be release a new climate bill the week of Earth Day.

Please come Thursday and help spread the word!

UPDATE: See the writeup of the conference, watch the video, and see who signed on here.

Inviting All Faith Leaders to Speak Out Against Climate Change

Published by Chuck under Global Warming

Climate change will lead to dessertification and other calamities that will mostly affect the world's poor. It is time for religious leaders to speak out for comprehensive climate and energy legislation.

Calling pastors, rabbis, imams, deacons, bishops, social action chairs, and other faith leaders to add your names to a sign-on letter about climate change.

As the Senate debates whether or not to act to stop climate change, now is the time for faith leaders to add our voices to clean energy, anti-poverty, and environmental groups to call for a strong and comprehensive climate and energy bill.

UPDATE: See final list of signers and watch a video of the press conference where the letter was released here.
