HUMAN RIGHTS IN MEXICO presentation by Tanja Markus

Si Paz logoTanja Markus of SIPAZ (Servicio Internacional para la Paz, International Service for Peace) will speak on Sunday, April 27, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 218 N. Adams (corner of Emmet and Adams), Ypsilanti.

Tanja Markus is an international human rights advocate and team member of SIPAZ in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. SIPAZ was founded in 1995, following the Zapatista uprising in 1994, by an international coalition of faith-based and peace groups. SIPAZ monitors the conflict in Chiapas, Mexico and supports the search for nonviolent solutions that contribute to the construction of a just peace.

Tanja is from Lund, Sweden. Raised in a community of political exiles, her friends were children of families that had fled dictatorships in Chile, Argentina and Nicaragua. Learning their stories and the history and struggles of Latin America called forth in her a deep commitment to human rights and justice. Tanja holds a Masters in Law from the University of Lund with an emphasis in Human Rights and Humanitarian Law. She has worked with the UN High Commissioner on Refugees in Stockholm, The International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in the Hague, and with Caritas in Valencia, Spain. Tanja has been an international observer and accompanier in Guatemala and Chiapas since 2005.
