Where did the Pizza Go? Wisconsin Group Comes up with creative way to highlight Pentagon spending?

2005 Budget Spending

Half our federal income taxes go to the Pentagon. That’s a big piece of the pie.

Recently a Peace Action group in Wisconsin came up with a creative way to make that point. They staged pizza deliveries to media outlets. On the outside of the box was a Military Spending Pie Chart and a note saying “Pizza Brought to you by Peace Action” but inside the box was only half a pizza and a note saying that “the military got the other half of the pie.”

How would you make the point of how much of our money the Pentagon gobbles up? Post your ideas in the comments section below.

Here’s an idea I had for street theater. Instead of Pac Man, it’s Pent Man, a giant Pentagon pie-chart that eats up school spending, heathcare and the environment.

Why do many say federal spending for military is about 20%, while I notice most left leaning sites say it is much more…..over 50%????

The question is what do you include in the “pie.”

If you look at the discretionary budget, the amount we pay on April 15, the military is about half the budget. This used to be how the government reported its numbers, and they reported programs like social security separately since that money can’t be moved from one pot to another.

During the Vietnam era, the government moved to an omnibus budget formula where our April 15 taxes are lumped together with things like Social Security and Medicare.

The other factor to consider is that some military expenses are outside of the Pentagon. For example, nuclear weapons research is largely under the Department of Energy.
