Peace is a local issue–ICPJ Encourages Ann Arbor City Council to call for Peace in Iraq

The Ann Arbor City Council is considering a resolution to push Congress to bring an end to the war in Iraq, and ICPJ is supporting this effort.

Here is our statement to the Ann Arbor City Council Caucus session regarding this peace resolution:

Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice fully supports the proposed Iraq resolution presented to City Council.

Certainly, the failed war in Iraq is an international incident and a national concern, but it is also a deeply local issue. The war in Iraq has already cost Ann Arbor taxpayers over 129 million dollars, money that could have provided over one thousand units of affordable housing, provided healthcare for over 77,000 children, or fully funded over 6,000 college students for their full four years of study. This war in Iraq is bankrupting Ann Arbor, and for the sake of our community, we need to do better.

The book of Proverbs admonishes us to, “seek peace and pursue it.” Peacemaking is a deeply spiritual endeavor, upheld by all faith traditions (and acknowledged by many secular traditions as well). We the people of faith and conscience of the Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice encourage you to take on this work of peacemaking by adopting the proposed resolution. Please act, for the sake of America, for the sake of Iraq, and yes, for the sake of Ann Arbor.

In peace,

Chuck Warpehoski, Director

The resolution passed, 8-2, with Rapundalo and Higgins voting against. Thank you to everyone who came out to support this!
