Ben and Jerry’s Foundation awards grant to Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice for program to educate about poverty and budget priorities

The Ben and Jerry’s Foundation awarded a $4,670 grant to the Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice to expand and their Welcome to the State of Poverty Welfare Simulations Program.

The Welcome to the State of Poverty Welfare Simulations Program is a role-play experience where participants simulate a month living in poverty, complete with challenges of arranging for childcare, managing transportation, and getting to job training.

Following the simulation, participants discuss the activity, as well as discuss how federal budget priorities affect the amount of resources available to help people get out of poverty.

“Many foundations support efforts to feed the hungry,” noted Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice director Chuck Warpehoski, “we’re delighted that the Ben and Jerry’s Foundation is willing to fund an effort to explore why people are hungry.”

“I’ve seen the power of this simulation first-hand,” commented Jason Crosby, Program Coordinator for the Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice, “the simulation experience really helps people understand how hard people in poverty have to work just to put food on the table, keep a roof over their head, and care for their children. The Ben and Jerry’s Foundation grant will help us share this program with more people who can benefit from this understanding.”

Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice bring together people from different faiths and backgrounds to work together to promote peace and justice. To learn more, please visit www.icpj.net.
