anti-war candlelight vigil on August 28

“Stand Up in September,” an anti-war, candlelight vigil planned in Ann Arbor by Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice, Operation Democracy/MoveOn.org, and Michigan Peaceworks is scheduled at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 28 at the University of Michigan Diag.

The evening event is one of nearly 500 organized throughout the country by MoveOn.org, a national family of grassroots organizations dedicated to bringing everyday Americans into the political process. Founded in 1989, MoveOn.org today counts more than 3.3 million members.

Other vigils will be held Tuesday in Benton Harbor, Flint, Grand Rapids, Holland, Kalamazoo , Lansing, Pontiac and Petosky.

The aim of the vigils is to serve notice to politicians returning to Washington in September of deep, widespread opposition to the Iraq war. “The time for petty politics, delay and inaction has come to an end,” MoveOn.org organizers claim. “The time has come for Congress to STAND UP.”

People of all groups, faiths and creeds are urged to demonstrate solidarity by participating in the vigil, which is co-sponsored in Ann Arbor by Anti-War Action, Interfaith Council for Peace & Justice, and Michigan Peace Works.
