The International Response to Genocide in the 21st Century: The Crisis in Darfur

On April 20th, from 4-6:30 p.m., Halle Library Auditorium, Eastern Michigan University, there will be a symposium on the Darfur situation, and ICPJ will be part of the response.

4:05-4:10 Welcome and introduction: Dr. Richard Irwin Brown , Pres. HVUNA

4:10-4:25 Reenactment of UN Security Council session on Rwanda, April 30, 1994: EMU Model UN team

4:25-5:25 Panel presentations on various dimensions of the crisis (15-20 minutes each)

1) Overview: dimensions of the crisis; scope of international response; impediments to effective intervention – Professor Benaiah Yongo-Bure, Department of Social Science, Kettering University

2) Role of the United Nations and international law – Professor Steven Ratner, University of Michigan Law School

3) What can citizens do? The role of international NGOs and civil society – Colin Daly, STAND (Students Taking Action Now on Darfur), University of Michigan and Chuck Warpehoski, Director, Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice.
